June 6th P&F Results in Fresno County

Local Candidates

State Senate

There are no Peace and Freedom Party candidates for State Senate in Fresno County.

U.S. House of Representatives

There are no Peace and Freedom Party candidates for U.S. House of Representatives in Fresno County.

State Assembly

John Crockford won the Peace and Freedom Party nomination for State Assembly in the 29th District, which includes half of Fresno, all of Clovis, most of Madera, and various smaller towns and unincorporated areas in Fresno and Madera Counties. He received 26 votes in Fresno County, of 27 in the entire district.

Local Non-partisan Offices

The Fresno County Peace and Freedom Party organization did not endorse any candidates for local non-partisan offices, such as Fresno City Council and Fresno County Board of Supervisors, which were voted on in the June 6th primary election. Fresno P&F did send questionnaires to candidates for those offices, however, and published responses on its website.

Peace and Freedom Party Central Committees

No members of the Peace and Freedom Party Central Committees were elected from Fresno County in 2004, but several people, including county chair John Crockford, were appointed to the Fresno County Peace and Freedom Party Central Committee, and their terms expired after the June 2006 primary election. The webmaster is not aware of any candidates only for Central Committees from the county who ran in the June 2006 primary election, though John Crockford became an elected member of the Central Committees when he was nominated for State Assembly.

Local Measures

The Fresno County Peace and Freedom Party took a position on one local ballot measure that appeared on the ballot June 6th in Fresno County, Measure A in the city of Fresno.

Measure A - City of Fresno Charter Amendment: This measure would have repealed Section 1504 of the Charter of the City of Fresno which was adopted by the voters in 1993 as part of the City's change to a Mayor-Council form of government. Under Charter Section 1504, the City Council membership will increase from seven to nine when the population for the City of Fresno reaches 540,000 - estimated to occur in approximately 8 years.

An increase in the number of City Council members will preserve the ratio of one Council member per 60,000 residents. If Measure A had been adopted, City Council members would be representing an ever-increasing number of residents resulting in less effective representation and a reduction in the accountability of politicians to the people. A vote for Measure A was a vote against the democratic principle of proportional representation. The Peace and Freedom Party of Fresno County recommended that you vote NO on Measure A. With our opposition, the measure was defeated by a vote of 21,720 (52.81%) to 19,406 (47.19%).

Regional Candidate

Richard Perry is running for Board of Equalization in the 2nd Board of Equalization District, which includes all of Fresno County. He received 55 votes in Fresno County, of 866 in the entire district.

Statewide Candidates

The slate of Peace and Freedom Party candidates for statewide partisan public offices are:

  • Governor: Janice Jordan (3,849 statewide, 56 in Fresno County)
  • Lieutenant Governor: Stewart Alexander (3,549 statewide, 53 in Fresno County)
  • Secretary of State: Margie Akin (3,929 statewide, 62 in Fresno County)
  • Treasurer: Gerald Sanders (3,681 statewide, 56 in Fresno County)
  • Controller: Liz Barrón (4,047 statewide, 60 in Fresno County)
  • Attorney General: Jack Harrison (3,736 statewide, 53 in Fresno County)
  • Insurance Commissioner: Tom Condit (3,850 statewide, 53 in Fresno County)
  • U.S. Senator: Marsha Feinland (4,109 statewide, 57 in Fresno County)

The Peace and Freedom Party also recommended a vote for Sarah Knopp for Superintendent of Public Instruction. She is a teacher and a socialist, though not a P&F member, who came in second of five candidates with 695,372 votes (17.3%) statewide for this nominally non-partisan position. In Fresno County, she got 12,675 votes (15.0%).

Statewide Measures

There were two propositions on the statewide ballot June 6th, assigned proposition numbers 81 and 82. At its April 1st-2nd State Central Committee meeting, the Peace and Freedom Party took a position on one of measures.

  • Proposition 81 (the voter pamphlet's summary, analysis, arguments for and rebuttal, arguments against and rebuttal, and the full text are available as PDFs): "California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 2006." This measure would have issued $600 million of bonds to renovate existing library buildings and build new libraries. Because we are generally opposed to bond measures, but in favor of building more libraries, the Peace and Freedom Party neither supported nor opposed Proposition 81. The bonds were defeated by a statewide vote of 2,326,305 (47.3%) to 2,590,954 (52.7%). In Fresno County, the vote was 47,601 (47.7%) to 52,016 (52.3%).
  • Proposition 82 (the voter pamphlet's summary, analysis, arguments for and rebuttal, arguments against and rebuttal, and the full text are available as PDFs): "Preschool Education. Tax on Incomes Over $400,000 for Individuals; $800,000 for Couples. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute." This measure would have raised the income tax on the rich by 1.7% and used the money raised to fund universal preschool programs for four-year olds. The Peace and Freedom Party urged that you vote YES on 82. The measure was defeated by a statewide vote of 1,958,200 (39.2%) to 3,036,217 (60.8%). In Fresno County, the vote was 35,876 (35.6%) to 64,658 (64.4%).
