Richard Perry for Board of Equalization, 2nd District

Richard Perry

Richard R. Perry of Sacramento is running for state Board of Equalization in the 2nd District, which includes most of the inland portions of the state from the Oregon border to Kern county, plus inland and eastern portions of Santa Barbara county, all of Ventura county, the northern two-thirds of Los Angeles county, and the south-western corner of San Bernardino county.

(More specifically, the 2nd Board of Equalization District includes all of Siskiyou, Modoc, Shasta, Lassen, Tehama, Plumas, Glenn, Butte, Sierra, Sutter, Yuba, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, El Dorado, Amador, Alpine, San Joaquin, Calaveras, Stanislaus, Tuolomne, Mono, Merced, Mariposa, Fresno, Madera, Kings, Tulare, Inyo, Kern and Ventura counties. In Santa Barbara county, it includes Orcutt (but not Santa Maria), Vandenberg Village, Mission Hills, Lompoc, Los Alamos, Buellton, Solvang, Santa Ynez, Goleta and Montecito (but not Santa Barbara) and other points north or east of these cities and towns. In Los Angeles county, it includes the Angeles National Forest and locations north and east of it, plus the communities of Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa, Vincent, Citrus, San Dimas (but not Glendora), La Verne, Pomona and Claremont. In San Bernardino county, it includes the communities of Chino Hills, Chino, Ontario (but not Upland or Rancho Cucamonga), Fontana, Rialto, Bloomington, Colton and Grand Terrace, and parts of the city of San Bernardino (more or less the areas west of Waterman Avenue and south of Highland Avenue).)

His statement for the June Voter Information Guide that went to all registered voters in California was "Raise corporate tax rates."

Richard has been endorsed by his union, the California State Employees Association, California's largest public employees group which represents 140,000 active and retired state workers.

Candidate Statement

Born in Massachusetts in 1956, Richard Perry has lived in the Sacramento area since moving to California in 1969. He became active in the peace movement in college, and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Journalism in 1978 from California State University Sacramento (CSUS). He continued his political activism after graduation, supporting the Farmworkers Union and the Central American Action Committee as well as other organizations for peace and justice.

Since 1985 Richard Perry has worked as a gardening specialist at CSUS, and he has been active in his union on campus from the start. He has served on bargaining teams, and has been a union steward and Chapter President with SEIU Local 2579 (Chapter 303) since 2000.

While his union activities take up much of his non-working time, Richard is also quite active in anti-war work, and with Health Care for All, an organization dedicated to bringing universal health care coverage to all Californians.

Richard's hobbies include electric bicycles and baseball. He reports that as a supporter of the downtrodden, he is a Red Sox fan. He also reads mysteries for relaxation.

A strong opponent of the tendency in recent years to reduce taxes on the rich while increasing the tax burden on working people, Richard Perry would like to see cuts in sales taxes (mainly paid by workers and poor people) and increases in the tax rates on the wealthiest Californians and their corporations. His belief that the tax system in California and the U.S.A. is rigged in favor of the super-rich has led him to run for the Board of Equalization, California's elected tax board. He frankly states that he intends to represent working people, not the wealthy campaign donors who are represented by the present incumbent in the Second District.

As he is unopposed in the Peace and Freedom Party primary in June, he will go on to face the nominees of the Republican, Democratic and Libertarian Parties in the November general election. As the candidate of the working-class Peace and Freedom Party, he is proud to list his occupation on the ballot as "gardener."
